Located at the foot of the Foping Mountains, Songzanlin Lamasery is the largest Tibetan Buddhist lamasery in Yunnan Province and one of the 13 famous monasteries of Tibetan Kham. The Lamasery was built in 1674 with the auspices of the Fifth Dalai Lama and Emperor Kangxi. Occupying an area of 33.3 hectares, Songzanlin was built in the style of Potala Palace in Lhasa; hence it has another name "Small Potala Palace". The Songzanlin Monastery is the largest Tibetan Buddhism monastery in Yunnan Province. Since the layout of the Songzanlin Monastery is same as Potala Palace, it is also named "Small Potala Palace".
On every 29 November of the Lunar year, the monastery becomes even more mysterious and sacred with the annual Tibetan Gedong Festival when a mask dancing performance is held.
The temple is full of treasures. There are a lot of golden figures of Buddha josses, golden lamps, Tibetan lections, silver censers and so on. All of these are wonderful collections accumulated from each dynasty. They are precious productions made by people of both Tibet nationality and Han nationality.
