The Former Residence of Chairman Mao is located at Shangwu Ground, Tudi Chong, Shaoshan village, Shaoshan Township. The temple is composed of nearly twenty structures, six courtyards and long corridors surrounded by brick a wall which is typical of the ancestral temple layout in Guangdong Province. The Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family is world renowned not only for its imposing architecture, but also for its exquisite craftwork and decoration. It is possible to see the many arts and crafts used in the different styles of wood carvings, stone carvings, brick carvings, pottery sculptures, murals and bronze and iron castings in the temple. Keyuan was built during the Qing Dynasty by Zhang Jingxiu. Construction started in 1850 and was finished by 1858. After that, Keyuan has been expanded and reconstructed a few times.
Zhang Jingxiu was first and second assigned as Anchashi (按察使) of the Guangxi and Jiangxi provinces by a Qing dynasty emperor. (A Qing officer rank which corresponds to a vice governor nowadays.) After he retired and returned to his home town Dongguan he lived in Keyuan. Zhang was good at and fond of Chinese writing, painting, chess, poetry, antiquing, stone collecting, etc. He invited friends, poets, scholars and painters to gather in Keyuan. And that’s how Keyuan became one of the origins of Guangdong culture.

Keyuan Garden means 'a garden not too bad for visiting' in Chinese. Its creator was somewhat on the modest side. In fact, the garden is a splendid architectural work. It is a multifunctional garden which joins the living room, villa, yard, garden and study together skillfully in a limited area. Built in the classical garden style, it has dozens of traditional buildings, including pavilions, pools and bridges and most of the buildings are named with the word Ke (means 'not too bad' in Chinese), such as Kezhou Pool and Ketang Hall.

This red tower still has cannons used by the British during the Opium Wars. You will find accounts of Guangzhou from Neolithic times till the early 20th century in Guangzhou Museum. History of the last 60 years says that the tower was destroyed five times and reconstructed after the ruins.
It was turned into Guangzhou Municipal Museum in 1929, displaying the cultural relics of Guangzhou of different dynasties, which went through more than 2000 years. In 1950, it changed its name into Guangzhou Museum.

The tomb of Zhao Mei is well hidden

The tomb of Zhao Mei is well hidden, thanks to its being located 20 meters under the Xianggang Hill. It was during an excavation in 1983 that the place came into light. It has seven chambers, and its stone walls are decorated by various colored murals. It took about 750 stones to build the mausoleum that occupies a 14,000 square meter space. But these wall drawings are not all; you will also find more than 1000 relics and artifacts inside the tomb. The most famous of these are made in terra cotta, while you will also find a few made of bronze. The bronze items include serial bells - about three sets, 36 mirrors, and 36 vessels. These bronze vessels were used in the funeral along with jade garments. There are three seals made of gold in the tomb. Highlighting the mausoleum is a silk-jade garment made up of 2,291 pieces of jade. Though jade garments with pieces connected by gold, silver, or copper are not uncommon, this garment with jade pieces connected by silk is the only one of its kind in the world. Nor are historical records available to verify other jade garments connected by silk thread. In addition, the style of buttons down the front is unique among unearthed jade garments. This silk-sewn-jade garment shows the early development of jade garments as well as development of the Nanyue culture.

In addition, three sets of bronze serial bells, thirty-six bronze vessels, thirty-six bronze mirrors, and three gold seals give visitors a glimpse of the ancient Nanyue Culture. Foreign articles excavated in the mausoleum indicate that Guangzhou was an ancient Marine Silk Road starting point. For example, there are five African elephant trunks, a silver box featuring Western Asian silver wares, and bronze incense burners and frankincense from Southeast Asia.

Behind it, you will see the resting Hall, the living room of the Goddess of Tianhou, where a sitting sculpture of Tianhou is displayed together with some simple instruments of her daily life.

  The Memorial complex consists of an archway, the main building - memorial hall and affiliated buildings, with the gated entrance made up of three small arches. The main Memorial Hall building looks striking and beautiful. The roof is made of sapphire blue glazed tiles. On the eaves and arches are carved with exquisite paintings and patterns. The hall is also characteristic with white and yellow brick walls, dado of blue stones, red columns, windows made of terrazzo, the granite base of Buddhist-style building. Below the brim of the central gate of the hall, there is a horizontal board which is inscribed with 'the Whole World as One Community'.
